Ingredients and equipment:
- Eggs
- A saucepan
- Water
- Stove
Instructions:
- Choose your eggs: Start with fresh eggs for the best results. The age of the eggs can affect how easy they are to skin once they're boiled.
- Prepare a saucepan: Select a saucepan that's large enough to hold the number of eggs you want to boil without overcrowding. A single layer of eggs is best. Fill the saucepan with enough water to cover the eggs with at least an inch of water.
- Place the eggs in the saucepan: Gently place the eggs in the saucepan. You can add as many as you'd like, but make sure they are in a single layer.
- Heat the water: Place the saucepan on the stove over high heat. Allow the water to come to a rolling boil. This can take a few minutes.
- Reduce heat and simmer: Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to medium or low to maintain a gentle, rolling boil. Let the eggs cook for the desired amount of time. The cooking time depends on how you want your eggs:
- Soft-boiled eggs: Cook for about 4-5 minutes for a runny yolk and slightly firmer whites.
- Hard-boiled eggs: Cook for about 9-12 minutes for a fully set yolk and firm whites.
- Cool the eggs: When the eggs are done cooking, remove the saucepan from the heat and carefully pour out the hot water. Immediately transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water. This helps stop the cooking process and makes the eggs easier to peel.
- Peel the eggs: After the eggs have cooled in the ice water for about 10 minutes, tap them gently on a hard surface to crack the shell, and then peel the shell off. Start from the wide end (where the air pocket is) for easier peeling.
- Enjoy: You can enjoy your boiled eggs as is, sprinkle them with a bit of salt and pepper, use them in salads, or make deviled eggs or egg salad sandwiches.
